The Schuh-Lady

Once upon a time there was an enchanting young lady, as beautiful and graceful as a princess. People loved coming to her small, fine store full of lovingly made chocolate specialties. When the time came for the young woman to get married, a big competition was held in the village. Young men from all over the country gathered to pay their respects to the beautiful lady and win her over with daring feats, expensive gifts and musical performances. But she chose the shoemaker, who presented her with a magnificent shoe made of the finest chocolate, as the prince of her heart.
The Story

Grand Café Schuh - since 1818

  • 1818 Purchase of land by Johan Ritschard on Höheweg in Interlaken and construction of a boarding house.
  • 1885 Purchase by Christian Schuh.
  • 1899 Creation of the famous Schuh-Lady by Jacob Friedrich Schuh. A very skilled confectioner, Jacob indulged his great love of chocolate and sold the finest confectionery and patisserie to locals and tourists. The Schuh quickly became famous in Europe.
  • 1910 Death of Jacob Friedrich Schuh. The Schuh family loses interest in the chocolate business. 
  • However, its good reputation remained intact until 1955.
  • 1955 Purchase by Fritz Beutler with a clear vision for the future of the business. He renovated the 22 rooms and extended the kitchen and restaurant facilities.
    Fritz (junior) and his wife Hedy continued his father's work and soon also offered international dishes.
  • 2003 Takeover by Cecilia and Jürg Kirchhofer with a focus on high quality and excellent service.
  • In February 2011, Eun-Hae and Jürg Lehmann took over the Grand Café Restaurant and continued to run it with genuine passion and pleasure. They always stuck to the core values of the Schuh and continued to develop its uniqueness for the benefit of the guests.
  • In 2022, Eun-Hae and Jürg Lehmann passed the cooking spoon on to the younger generation of Thomas Michel, Simon Schild and Franz Amacher, who continue to run the Schuh restaurant successfully to this day.
In the 1950s, the then German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer said: "The shoe is always good" - this is still true today.
